Curatorial insight:The Spinifex Men’s Collaborative is a group of senior artists, who invite younger Pitjantjatjara men to join them in making collaborative paintings about Country. Most of the artists reside or move between Ilkurlka and Tjuntjuntjara, Western Australia. They, like the other Western Desert and APY painters, compose paintings that depict Tjukurrpa (Dreaming) stories and sites that continue to be important.Ngura alinytjara represents a complex of sites (in a northerly direction) that includes the spiritual home of the Spinifex people; ‘ngura’ means home and ‘alinytjara’ means north. The painting shows a continuum in the sort of subjects, composition and aesthetic that Spinifex artists have developed since they began painting in the 1990s (AGWA 2018).
