I painted this picture after seeing an image by Velasquez in a seriesof high definition photographs. I also found images of black people asslaves in renaissance paintings, so I wanted to blend the two togetherin my own self-portrait to make comment about it. I also liked the waypower is shown in portraiture by Goya, Velasquez, Joshua Reynolds,Wright of Derby, Hogarth, Artemisia Gentileschi, Francis Bacon andLucian Freud.

Artist statement, 2018I painted this picture after seeing an image by Velasquez in a series of high definition photographs. I also found images of black people as slaves in renaissance paintings, so I wanted to blend the two together in my own self-portrait to make comment about it. I also liked the way power is shown in portraiture by Goya, Velasquez, Joshua Reynolds, Wright of Derby, Hogarth, Artemisia Gentileschi, Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud.
