Curatorial insightIn the Mother series, Cook presents portraits of the same Aboriginal woman – a mother – dressed in 1960s clothing. She is photographed at various locations in a remote and seemingly isolated town. The composition is black and white, bar the colour used to draw the eye to the woman and accompanying props. The props are mainly objects of child’s play and yet there is no child. These works explore the mother-child relationship and leaves viewers to respond to notions of both absence and presence, as well as loss. Cook creates a vehicle for us to think and feel about the rupture in the mother-child relationship. The works hark to the experience of the Stolen Generations, as well as legal and immoral adoption in Australia. While the work is not a literal account of the artist's life experience, it was inspired by his story of being adopted at birth. (AGWA 2016)
