Curatorial insightGary Lee is an artist, curator and anthropologist. His creative practice extends across three decades and he has worked within the fields of fashion, illustration, design and photography. In most recent years Lee has focused his artistic practices on photographic portraiture. This selection of twelve photographic works by Lee represents his artistic focus over the past three years and highlights his interest in capturing images of men from all walks of life. Lee chooses subjects to photograph who often exist outside of western society’s stereotypical images of masculinity. Through this process he highlights the actualities of masculinity and gender in the contemporary world, seeing and capturing natural beauty in each of his models. His portraits capture the male figure in its diverse and complex emotional, psychological and physical states of being whilst also depicting relationships between men. (AGWA 2011)
