Curatorial insightHEAT depicts Thompson's personal memories and lived experience. This captivating work is a personal recollection of visiting the harsh desert Australian landscapes with his father. Each of the three components that comprise this video triptych contains the face of a young Indigenous woman. Her image is representative not only of a sacred mother-earth, but also the seductive and dangerous nature of the Australian landscape, which if not understood and respected can lead to peril. Like all of his cultural creations, Thompson considers HEAT to be a self-portrait, as within each of his works of art is a portrait of his culture and his identity, beyond the realms of his own physicality.
