Curatorial insightBlackBlack juxtaposes the traditional zigzag designs from Andrew’s own Wiradjuri culture, usually found on shields and boomerangs, with an image from a cigarette packet found during his travels in Japan. The work challenges the viewer to become more familiar with Wiradjuri designs, while the cigarette logo reminds us of how the media and corporations contain and control identity, and how some dominant languages rail-road other meanings to words. Multiple layerings of culturally encoded meanings within the work are reminiscent of contemporary advertising. (AGWA, 2005)
