Curatorial insightIn Miriam, Andrew presents an elegant and sensuous image of a young Aboriginal woman. The artist says he wished to create something that was 'purely beauty, black beauty'. This image makes a statement about aesthetics and photography. In contrast to nineteenth-century anthropological images of Aboriginal bodies - such as John William Lindt's studio portraits of Aboriginal men and women posed in elaborately staged settings - Andrew's photographs present the Aboriginal subject as empowered, beautiful and seductive.
