Curatorial insightConsidered to be one of the most outstanding young artists of the Warmun community, Charlene Carrington was inspired to paint by Hector Jandany and Queenie McKenzie who taught painting at the local school. Charlene’s artistic pedigree is exceptional; her grandfathers are Hector Jandany, Beerbee Mungnari and Patrick Mung Mung, her grandmother is Betty Carrington, and her parents are Churchill Cann and Sadie Carrington. As a child Charlene assisted Rover Thomas by mixing his ochres and learnt the techniques of mixing and applying the ‘galiwan’ – the oil-based resin that is added to the ochre as a binder – from Jack Britten and Rover Thomas. Her works are thus grounded in a technically strong artistic tradition, but reflect her own unique artistic perspective. (AGWA 2007)
