Curatorial insightWatiya tjuta Tjukurrpa relates to the artist's father's country, Uwalki, west of Haasts Bluff (Ikuntji) in the Kintore ranges. Desert oaks, native grasses and water-storing shrubs are staggered across the shimmering sand dunes at Uwalki, a landscape both minimal and complex. The country can appear soft, inviting and gentle, or hard-edged and thirst-inducing. Mitjili Napurrula’s paintings conjure both these aspects of place – the arresting and subdued.
