Curatorial insightWakartu Cory Surprise is an established and prolific contemporary Walmajarri artist who currently lives and works in Fitzroy Crossing, in the east Kimberley region of Western Australia. Surprise was born in the Great Sandy Desert and spent many years working as a camp cook on stations throughout the north-west of Australia. In the late 1980s she settled with her husband at Bayulu community, and it was here that she first began to paint at Karrayili Adult Education Centre. Surprise is a natural colourist and depicts her country utilising large areas of bold bright colour, interconnected yet clearly defined through use of strong unifying white line. Since her first solo exhibition in 2004, Surprise has established herself as one of the most celebrated and prolific Kimberley painters. (AGWA 2011)
