Curatorial insightPaddy Tjamitji/Jaminji was born on and has lived most of his life on Bedford Downs Station in the Kimberley. Like many of his countrymen, as a teenager and later as an adult, he worked as a stockman at Bedford Downs Station and later at the old Lissadell Station. He was one of the first to take up residence at the Warmun community at Turkey Creek, in what amounted to a mass Aboriginal exodus from station properties in the mid 1970s, following the implementation of equal wages for Aboriginal workers in 1969. Ironically the passing of this bill saw many lose their jobs. Jaminji worked closely with his colleague Rover Thomas on the Gurirr Gurirr dance-drama.
