Curatorial insightCampbell Jnr’s bright, cartoon-like paintings touch on themes of death, political-determination, segregation at local picture theatres, colonial conquest and such mundane experiences as suburban living and working on the railways. His paintings tell of his experiences of racism in small country towns. He was excluded from bars and roped off at the front of the picture theatre, and suffered grief over the destruction wrought by alcohol in the community.
